You are an awesome teacher and will have many ideas of your own when it comes to teaching this unit on matter. Here are some ideas of things to discuss to help you get started.

Everything in the world is made of matter. Matter is anything that takes up space, including us! Look around you, identify the matter you see and describe its shape, color, flexibility, hardness and texture (the way it feels).
When we describe objects, we are identifying their ‘properties. Think of everything around us and brainstorm all the words we use to describe objects. (large, small, flexible, rough, smooth, slimy…..)
Describe the properties of a solid.
Describe the properties of a liquid.
Describe the properties of a gas.
How does the temperature affect solids?
How does the temperature affect liquids?
What is meant by changes of state?
Describe changes of state in solids, liquids and gases.
Compare and contrasts the three types of matter.
Classify at least 5 liquids, solids and gases.
Make several connections about states of matter ( ice is the solid form of water, heat melts the solid to a liquid etc.)
Describe the physical changes that occur between the changes.
Is matter still the same even though it has changed state? How do you know?
Can water be all three states? Explain.
Matter is everything, it has mass and takes up space. Explain this.
What type of matter is most suited to build bridges? Why?
What type of matter is most absorbent? How do you know?
What type of matter is more suitable to build wheels from? Why do you think so?
What types of matter do we eat?
Brainstorm all the matter you can think of that is flexible and will bend.
Can you think of things that aren’t matter? (feelings, sound, thoughts, colors, shadows).
How many foods are solid that can be liquid or liquids that can be solids?
Why do puddles dry up?
What happens when you breathe on a mirror? Why do you think this happens?
What does dissolve mean?
Can you tell me what things dissolve?
What does evaporation mean? Can you give me any examples of evaporation?
Changes in matter happen with freezing, melting, evaporation and condensation. Can you
give me examples of these changes in matter?
What types of matter can’t you see?
How many foods are solid that can be liquid or liquids that can be solids?
What type of matter is absorbent? How do you know?
Why type of matter is not absorbent? How do you know?
Indicate the ways that you can change matter with your hands. (Bend wire, mold clay, cut paper,
make sand castles…)
