Pendulum Lab

When students do science labs it gets them doing deeper thinking. Why do things do what they do? What affects how long a pendulum swings for? In this lab you will need string and things to swing from it like erasers. Will the pendulum swing faster with lighter or heavier weights? Will the length of the string make a difference? Predict your answer to these questions and be prepared to do a write up when the experiment is completed. Make 4 pendulums. Use a longer string and a shorter string with the same weights. Use a longer string and one heavier weight and one lighter weight. Hold the pendulum in one hand at shoulder length. Pull the weight from the pendulum out and even with the top of your head. Release it. Count how many times the pendulum swung before it stopped (or time it). (Do this 4 times). Did they learn mass does not affect the pendulum swing? That the longer the string is the longer it swings. The greater the angle the longer it swings.
