Friction Lab

Students are curious about the world around them and are full of questions about why things happen. This is a wonderful resource because it is easy enough for your struggling student to do with a partner without your assistance. What your grade 3's will need for this experiment is small balls, a large piece of cardboard and a sand or grass hill. Your students will discover force stops or slows down objects from touching each other. Predict will they go faster with or without the cardboard? Put the smaller ball on the hill and give it a gentle push. Put the cardboard on the hill and the ball on the cardboard. Give it a gentle push. (If you have a timer, measure how long it takes for the ball to reach the bottom.) Record what you discovered.
