Fastest Woman/Nia's Race

Paired reading exercise for grade five students. Two great stories about determination and perseverance. One will state true facts and the other is a fictional story. How do both passages show perseverance in the face of physical challenges? What role does belief in oneself play in each story?
How does Wilma’s real-life story influence Nia’s fictional journey? Which passage presents factual information, and which tells a story? How can you tell?

Wilma Rudolph was born in 1940 in Tennessee, the twentieth of twenty-two children. Her early life was marked by adversity—she contracted polio at age five, a disease that left her leg paralyzed. Doctors doubted she would ever walk again, let alone run.

Nia stood at the starting line, her heart pounding like a drum. She wasn’t
the fastest runner in her school, but today’s race meant more than
medals—it was about proving something to herself.
