| What 5th grader doesn't like to read about pirates? These paired reading passages will keep their interest as they read a true account and a fictional story. Both are about pirates and have some similarities but also have differences. Here is a small excerpt from both passages. There are comp questions but also ones about comparing the text. Anne Bonny was one of the most notorious pirates of the 18th century—and one of the few women to sail under the black flag. Born around 1700 in Ireland, Anne was the daughter of a lawyer and his servant. Her family eventually moved to South Carolina, where Anne grew up with a rebellious spirit and a sharp tongue. She married a small-time pirate named James Bonny, but their relationship soured when he became an informant for the British government. Jake had always loved pirate stories, but he never expected to find one in his grandfather’s attic. While rummaging through old trunks, he discovered a leather-bound book labeled: Ledger of A. Bonny. Inside were faded entries: ship names, stolen cargo, and cryptic notes like “silver hidden beneath the galley floor.” Jake’s heart raced. Could this be Anne Bonny’s journal? 1. How do both passages explore Anne Bonny’s legacy? 2. What evidence helped James connect the ledger to Anne Bonny? 3. How does the fictional story reflect real historical details? 4. Which passage presents factual information, and which uses imagination? How can you tell? | ||||
