| An earthquake is the shaking of the ground caused by sudden movements deep beneath Earth’s surface. These movements happen when large pieces of Earth’s crust, called tectonic plates, shift or bump into each other. Earthquakes learning about them, we can be better prepared and stay safe when they happen. Grade four students will find out lots information about earthquakes as the read this passage. It is paired with a story about Mandy and her experience. Mandy was doing her homework when the floor began to rumble. Her pencils rolled off the desk, and her chair wobbled. “Earthquake!” she shouted, remembering what her teacher had taught her. After reading the paired texts, one fiction and one non fiction, students are required to answer the comprehension questions that follow. Did they understand what they were reading?
