| Paired texts are a great resource for grade 4 students. They introduce fiction and non fiction texts that include comprehension and comparison questions that will test their critical thinking skills. The first passage is non fiction and included are many facts about real life treasure hunts. Fourth graders will read about Captain Kid, the mystery in Oak Island, Nova Scotia, Canada and the gold hidden in the Rocky Mountains. After reading students will complete comprehension questions about it. 1. Who was Captain Kidd and what is he known for? 2. What makes Oak Island a famous treasure site? 3. What did Forrest Fenn do in 2010? 4. What tools do treasure hunters use? 5. Why do people enjoy treasure hunts? The paired text is about forgotten fortune and is a fictional story. Ellie loved mysteries, especially ones with treasure. One day, while helping her grandma clean the attic, she found an old wooden box. Inside was a faded map and a note: *To whoever finds this—follow the trail and uncover the truth.* Follow Ellie on her journey and see what she finds. What did Ellie find in her grandma’s attic? What clues did Ellie follow on the map? What was inside the metal box? Who originally hid the treasure? How did Ellie feel after solving the mystery? After reading the paired texts provide students with the writing prompts so they can create their own story about a treasure hunt. | ||||
