Tips and strategies for learning to read and to teach reading. You'll find stages of reading and tips and strategies to learn to read and to teach reading. Prior to learning to read, it is important to know the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that they make. Once the sound symbol of the alphabet is known, the focus is on learning the high frequency words (Dolch Words) and using low vocabulary books to learn sight words. You'll find some basic books here. Use basic books with few words for beginning reading and as success occurs, move up in level of difficulty. Be sure to find leveled readers or books. Some of these are offered by number, some color and some by letter. Begin at the lowest and work your way up over time. Books that are just right mean that there are only a few words that aren't known. I like the five finger rule. A book is selected, open it to a page and begin reading, each time you come to a word that isn't known, hold up a finger. If you hold up 5 fingers on the page, the book is too difficult. This is a good rule of thumb for all readers.
