Note: Some children have better social skills than other, however, those with better social skills have enhanced opportunity in life. Time spent on social skill enhancement is time well spent.

Ask students to brainstorm what social skills are. (Appropriate conversations, body language, voice tone, gestures, language, listening, taking turns, having patience, ignoring distractions, being responsible, following rules, personal space, respecting others, asking for help,?)
Once social skills have been identified, break students into groups. Give each student one social skill to brainstorm what is appropriate and what isn?t appropriate for that social skill.
Have students practice accepting and giving genuine compliments.
Have students practice introducing themselves and learning about each other?s common interests.
Have students practice using tone of voice and voice volume with the same sentence. For instance, in a boring and with enthusiasm state ?We are going to the library? or ?We?re playing soccer at recess?. Show how voice tone can indicate enthusiasm, boredom, distaste. Do the same exercises with non verbal clues. (Eyes, gestures, facial expression, posture etc.)
Role play emotions by changing non verbal clues. (Happiness, sadness, boredom, anger, fright, tiredness, etc.)
In partners, take turns telling your partner what you?ve done since you got up using appropriate language, voice tone and gestures. The listener also shows interest and uses appropriate body language.
Brainstorm all the ways you can tell ?how? a person is feeling.
Use body language only to show how you feel: disappointed, sad, happy, anxious, angry,
uncertain, proud, shocked, surprised, confused, nervous.
Role play how individuals can join a group or join in play. Role play how students can make other students feel welcome.
Have students brainstorm rules for having conversations.
Do a body language mime. As you say the word, the students mime the body language, the
following words are great to try with this:
Fear, Anxious, Surprised, Angry, Hurt, Sad, Trustworthy and Empathetic, Curious,
Very Interested, Nervous, Confused, You don?t believe what somebody is saying.
Have students use the word ?Ah? or ?Really? with emphasis to show:
With Surprise, with pleasure , questioning, with doubt, with displeasure, with interest, without interest, with resentment, with fear, with anticipation, with shock.
Many students will need to learn the following:
How to listen effectively
How to ask for help
How to get the attention of others
How to disagree appropriately
How to be assertive without being aggressive
How to avoid blaming others
Don?t blame other.
