A comma in a list or series is used when there are three or more words.

The comma separates 3 or more words:
My favorite fruits are, apples, grapes, pears and
bananas.

The comma separates 3 or more word groupings:
I spent my day swimming in the pool, reading my book, babysitting my brother and making dinner.
We had pork chops, potatoes, buns and beans for
supper.

A listing or series comma can be replaced by an and or an or.
Jake seems to enjoy running, skipping and biking.
Jake seems to enjoy running and skipping and biking.

Tonight I watched TV, did my homework and brushed my teeth.
Tonight I watched TV and did my homework and brushed my teeth.
